HIK is a new type of information centre, where traditional higher educational services are present to a full extent, and in a unique way (due to the given concentration of services). For these reasons HIK is a unique institute nowhere else to be found in Hungary yet. It is a new kind of institution where information and electronic services are the main profile and traditional library use is only a supplementary service. Considering the main function of HIK, it can be said that HIK is not a library but a new kind of higher education information centre with strong information technology background and additional library services.

EISZ

The goal of the Electronic Information Service National Program is that electronic information sources that are essential for higher education and scientific research are bought through a national license and are made available to state and denominational higher educational institutions by the Ministry of Education. This way much more information can be provided to a much larger range of users at a relatively more favourable price.

EISZ is an important part of the higher education development program and of Hungary’s euro-atlantic integration, because it helps students, teachers and researchers of Hungarian higher education institutes to gain up to date information.

The EISZ program which started in the autumn of 2001 is unfortunately still not widely known at several segments of Hungarian higher education. HIK does not only provide free access to EISZ to university students but also provides an opportunity for students and researchers to make the use of browsers within EISZ easier. Thus HIK is organizing exhibitions and courses not only within HIK but also in several other educational centres within country. We are coordinating among the Ministry of Education, EISZ Committee and higher education institutes, and we are trying to estimate the needs for a more efficient information service.

HIK registered users are allowed to use the 3 main databases of EISZ - Web of Science, Swetsnet Navigator and Science Direct - and the complete information service of the system, they can browse within the valuable publications of Arcanum Publishing House, they can use our electronic dictionaries and they are allowed to read the 43 journals that are made accessible to EISZ users by the Publishing House of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. According to our plans we are to extend the range of services in the near future.

MULTIMEDIA COMPUTERS AND INTERNET ACCESS, INORMATION SERVICE

300 multimedia computers (identical in configuration) are provided to our users: These computers have broad band internet connection. Following the registration we are able to provide an email address and storage space to all of our registered users. It is possible to make and store documents and materials on the computers. The users can take home these documents on a floppy or a CD. Additionally to all this in out institute it is possible to print documents and to scan or reproduce documents which are on paper.

Our new registered users and the visitors can be informed about the building and its services at the customer service on the ground floor. In each reading room there is an information specialist who is ready to help the users with all their problems.

In the building there is a 100 Mbite/sec, CAT5 structured network with a maximum of one gigabit spine, that clamps together the more than 300 computers into a LAN (local area network). We provide broad band connection h to all of our users. The complete computer network of the building is protected by a double layered firewall from outside intruders. The local intranet with its several services makes life much easier to our registered users and regular visitors. We wish to call your attention to one of planned new service through the intranet site, that of the seat reservation system, which will show which seats are available in HIK. This tool will be later used for online seat reservation.

LIBRARY

The library of The Kempelen Farkas Student Information and Recourse Centre (HIK) opened in the spring of 2003. Since then several thousand books have been waiting for the visitors. Journals, manuals books and lecture notes cannot be loaned from the library to be taken home, however our visitors are allowed to use these documents anywhere within the building.

Our book stock is planned to amount to 14 000 books in the near future. In creating our book collection we aimed to take students’ needs into consideration and we tried to cover all the branches of science. We aim to provide the most frequently used manuals and books for our registered visitors. Our local collection includes important manuals, general encyclopaedias, dictionaries and technological dictionaries as well.

The library is located on the ground floor. Our registered users can choose the books they wish to read from the online catalogue or from the bookshelves. Only 3 books and one CD-ROM can be borrowed at one time. After a short registration students can take their seats anywhere in the building with the chosen books. They can use the books and manuals all throughout the opening hours. We would like to inform you that in order to use the library you definitely need to have a chip card.

In the library catalogue books can be searched by the author, title, subject heading or by the year of publication - this search can be done even before arriving into the building since the online catalogue is accessible via the internet on the HIK homepage. Our library collects DC-ROM databases also. The (present) collection of 230 CD-ROMs includes the most important databases used in Hungarian higher education. Several of these databases are not accessible via the Electronic Information Service (EISZ). In case our visitors would like to copy a few pages from the selected document the self-service photocopier can be used for this purpose which is located in the library room on the ground floor.

The requested books have to be returned to the library after using them or the latest 15 minutes before the closing hour. Library books and CDs cannot be taken out of the building. The central safety equipment signals immediately if someone tries to leave the building with a library book accidentally or on purpose. If a document is damaged on purpose by a registered user he or she is responsible for according to the regulations of the civil code.

The main goal of the Student Information Centre is to serve the students with all their needs so as we expand our book stock we try to take our visitors’ needs into consideration as much as possible. The library service would be pleased to give any information that our visitors need within the opening hours. Furthermore our visitors can give any suggestions through the HIK homepage regarding any requests about books missing, regarding not having enough copies or regarding what kind of new books they would like to see in the collection. Our colleagues will register all the incoming requests and they will try to obtain the books and manuals as soon as they can.

HOW TO USE OUR HIK MAILBOX?

We would like to inform you that you are able to see your HIK mailbox from outside the building through posta.hik.hu internet address.

This means that with the password and username given at the registration you are able to use your mailbox (which has 500 Mbyte store space) from anywhere in the world. The letters of the mailbox can be downloaded by a simple web browser (suggested type is Internet Explorer 6.0). The application is similar to Microsoft Outlook so its usage is also simple and can easily be obtained.
