Kempelen Farkas Student Information and Resource Centre

Kempelen Farkas Student Information and Resource Centre (abbreviation: HIK) is a modern service centre of the Hungarian higher education and a special institution of the Ministry of Education. The centre has opened its gate to the visitors on January 3. 2003. Since the opening in January more than 4000 students have decided to use the infrastructure offered by the institution for their studies and research. This number increases from week to week by about 130 -180. More than 800 people visit our institution each day and they spend approximately 3 hours here.

HIK is a new genre of institution where the information and electronic services create the main profile. Considering the main function of HIK, it can be defined as a higher educational, service and information centre with strong background of information technology and additional library services. The Student Information and Resource Centre, because of its modernity and uniqueness, can also be viewed as a testing of a national project where institutions with similar functions could be built.

The following group of people can become registered users of the institution: students, teachers and researchers who are members of higher education institutes. After paying the registration fee (920 HUF, 3200 HUF) the basic services of HIK can be used for free.

Besides the free use of internet, the registered members can use the Electronic Information Service (EISZ) National Program with all its databases, together with the several thousand books and manuals placed in the library of HIK, which are also part of the basic services of the institution. With the use of EISZ users are able to use electronic journals, dictionaries and other information sources of Hungarian and foreign databases which help them in their research.

The main goal of the institution is to provide all the help (infrastructural and in any other way), to the students, teachers and researchers in higher education (or those who would like to participate in higher education in the near future), that they need in order to attain all the knowledge necessary to complete their work and studies with the highest competence. This goal is being realized by the customer service of HIK where general information can be obtained about higher education. Thus students, teachers and researchers can get accurate answers to their questions at one place.

This new institution with its wide range of services has training courses for its visitors. These courses are held in three special course-rooms (with 12 seats in each) tooled with the most advanced information infrastructure. From the fall of 2003 these courses include EISZ courses, participants will be able to learn about the sphere of information technology still unknown to them and they can participate in language courses and preparation courses to the ECDL exam and at last they can learn about the process of the European integration.

The Student Information and Resource Centre, which is so far a unique institution still in Hungary, embodies much more than the above listed services since it is also a multifunctional programme centre where conferences, scientific lectures, book exhibitions, cultural programmes, or even musical performances can take place.

Hours and days spent here are made even more convenient by a kindergarten and a café. To make our services even more complex there is a copy-centre in the building and a book store (which opens in the autumn of 2003) and the local information service can provide information throughout the opening hours.

HIK is located in the centre of Budapest near several universities and academies. The palace of Earl István Károlyi is one of the magnificent buildings of the Mágnás quarter. Towards the end of the 1800s many wealthy families were drawn to the area behind the National Museum where they had the most famous architects of the age to design their palaces. The Ministry of Education had the building renovated and thus made an ideal learning and research centre in the capital. The institution can provide a seat for 500 people at once in its 13 computer rooms and 3 training rooms. There are 300 multimedia computers for word processing and access to the internet.

HIK starts its functioning with extra long opening hours. Visitors can come from 8 am to 10 pm from Monday to Saturday.
